Re: What happened, KP
No the referee wasnt upto the usual high standards i admire in the Hellenic league..... but that said we didnt need to react in the fashion we did and go down to 10 men.
We had the better of the first half, and ought to have been in front before Hooky took the lead. One outstanding save from their keeper, and a couple of poor efforts when well placed from Connors, and Terry.
Hooky were a very hard working side, who closed players down endlessly, and didnt allow anyone time on the ball. In particular they did a good job on J, who struggled to get into the game.
Hookys first goal was a very well taken effort, after our defence failed to clear, and their second early in the second half came from a Free Kick just outside the box. It was obviously a long way fom where i was stood, but it appeared to beat our keeper with ease. Not really sure how or why it seemed to go in so easily, so ill put it down to the fact that it must have been very well struck.
Again though we hae to look at the discipline. Needless Free kicks around the box have been the bain of our lies this season !
Then the referee decided he wanted in on the action. Despite the fact that the Hooky players had been swearing at him all night (just to illustrate how pooor he was for both sides), when a Hungerford player used a few expletives he walked straight over and dished out a red card.
Now dont get me wrong im all for dealing with foul and abusive, but surely the same for both sets of players isnt asking too much ????, and i have to ask why when at one point when a Hooky player actually swore directly in the referees face the official took no action.
So for the third Tuesday night game in a rowwe find ourselves 2-0 don, before we up the tempo.
Conors provided a lifeline wih approx 20 minutes to go, after pressurising the keeper into a mistake. His close proximity to the keeper saw the keeper hold onto the ball for way too long, and following a big shout from the throng behind the Hooky goal the refeee awared a free kick inside the home sides box.
With the home side awaiting the goalies kick, smart thinking from Connors saw him place the ball for the free kick, and roll it into the path of an equally quick thinking and fast moving Edney who smashed it into the back of the net.
So 2-1 cue frantic finale.
Following the goal Clarkey made the change that made us groan, Connors off, Charlie on. No disrespect intended to Charlie of course, but Connors in his current vein of form off ?
However with time running out, (or as the home side would claim already run out), Charlie was to prove that it was actually the correct decision.
His powerful strike, which appeared to be heading just wide , for a moment straight at me !, took a slight deflection of a Hooky defender and flew past the despairing keeper and into the corner of the net.
Probably a fair result given Hookys hard work and effort, and whilst people are now writing off our chances its worth remembering that the Nuts still have to pay a visit the Bourne, and that is no forgone conclusion !
