Hungerford 4 Witney 3 (part 2 )

This was an exciting game between two fine evenly matched sides. A complimentary word on Witney. They played very well, especially going forward, incisive down the channels, skilfull at no 9, always looking dangerous. Having already seen the top two contenders, Almonds and N.L.,on this showing Witney play the better football and must regret their mediocre start to the season. Witney scored first from a free kick, a carbon copy of the free kick Greenwich netted in the Vase game at Bulpit. Dominic Green, who again seemed poorly positioned in relation to his wall would do well to remember the estate agents mantra, location, location, location. Witney doubled their lead a few minutes later,a first time angled shot that somehow went in at the near post. Hungerford fought back almost immediately. A sublime Fitch volley that was a triumph of technique. Then Hungerford equalised, a bullet header from McCrae outside the box that beat the despairing dive of a possibly unsighted keeper. The Hungerford faithful breathed a collective sigh of relief. But the half wasnt done with us yet. Another fierce strike from fitch made it 3-2 to Hungerford. The Hungerford Fitch doubters fell collectively silent. The HT whistle blew. Phew. Early in the 2nd half Witney equalised, a decisive shot past Green. The play yo-yoed end to end . Then Hungerford scored their winner with 20 minutes to go. Copp did superlative work in mid field before moving a crisp ball to Edney out left. Edders made space for himself then clipped a short pass into the path of Gosling at the edge of the penalty area. A first time left foot placed the ball neat as a nut into thecorner of the net.A good goal to win a great game. In the bar afterwards the mobiles were out. The news came through, NL and Almonds had drawn,1-1. Hungerford climb closer.
