Hot knives anybody?

Does anybody know where I could find some hot knives? CRL has discontinued, as has Reid. Everybody I have checked has sold their old inventory. Any ideas?

Re: Hot knives anybody?

I had a guy that wants a few for residential work and I told him I'd see what I could find. If he's wanting to sell it I can pass the info along!

Re: Hot knives anybody?

It's why they specify "cold" when they say "cold knife". Think of a cold knife blade on the end of a soldering iron. It was made for cutting butyl.

Re: Hot knives anybody?

Boy, that brings back a few memories. Had a 'hot knife" in my old shop. We tried it on urethane since butyl never presented a removal problem. Those were the days of Escorts that had micron thickness of uri and pre-Wizard cable knife blades. Not an easy removal at times. (hot knife was NOT the answer, short sharp cold knife blades were)

Speaking of butyl install systems, anyone try, buy and use the European butyl system that had wire impregnated in it and one hooked up a battery to both heat it for install and removal?? (can't think of the name) I bought one because my installers had heard about it and we were doing the local MBZ dealer and the FW427 were installed using the same system.

Re: Hot knives anybody?

OPUS,
Fiat 124 and the 128.AAhh yes,i remember them well.
We used to use a battery charger to get the glass out.Took like 2-4 hrs for the urethane to heat up,and both w/s and moulding would come out as one unit.Got burned more than once also, man those chrome mouldings would get hot.
As for the hot knife, fumes galore. And very awkward to use.
