Re: 69 chevy pup

gasket set, round bottom corners, squared top corners...can be a real pain if it has chrome.

rope it in and roll. may need a hook tool in one bor two places.

Re: 69 chevy pup

AGN said they can be a real pain with chrome. I took that to mean they are just a pain without chrome.

I thought rope it in and roll meant start wtih rope and roll it over the pinch and in.

Thats how we do it. TLC and patience. Its that dang double lip as it rolls in on it and the 66 and older body style also that's the pain.

Mark 2 is right. Thats what I meant. Sorry it sounded the other way...I was really tired when I posted it.

These things definitley aren't easy and I don't do them unless I have to.

Re: 69 chevy pup

With aftermarket gaskets (whitch is all you can get)we use FYG or Safelite (lord forgive). With a PPG or LOF they fit to tight.

Re: 69 chevy pup

Papa,
These are best done with 2 men.
Put your gasket on the glass first.
If it has chrome moldings, insert
them in the gasket while it is still
on your W/S stand.Insert your rope in
the gasket. Lubricate pinchweld and gasket.
Center W/S in opening. You need 1 man on
the outside to apply constant pressure
to prevent gasket & chrome from popping out.
The hardest part of this job is making sure
the bottom lip of the gasket is down all
the way. Look for dirt lines on the body
to be sure you have it seated properly.
Once this is done, use a fiber-stick to tuck
the top of your gasket under the drip rail,
or your rope will not lip the gasket over
the pinch-weld. Your outside man should keep
constant pressure following you as you rope
this in, and flat handed smack with his other
hand. The top corners are the most difficult
part. As you round the corners with your rope,
pull in a circular motion and downward to
avoid tearing the gasket. F.Y.I.; This is
tough to do in cold weather. I hope you are in
a warm climate. Good luck!

Re: 69 chevy pup

I thought you might like a laugh , my first 685 back
almost 30 yrs ago in a dump truck. I had both feet up
on the windshield unhooking the rubber when it finally let go , landed on the hood , slid off the hood and smashed on the payment all while the customer stood and watched ! I don't think I could even get my legs bent enough to do that again. Anyway so much for comic relief, when you rope the bottom in and roll it stop half way up the sides and pull the glass down before you go to the top , that is if you want advice from a guy that bounces windshields off customer's vehicles.

Re: 69 chevy pup

LOL

I did that one time on a Peterbilt 1036 WS. I put my feet up and pushed...it flew off the pinchweld, through the air and **** near landed on the hood of the owners BMW. I had to take several deep breaths and sighs of relief after that one.

Re: 69 chevy pup

the tech who described the install in detail with two men is absolutely correct. i've been a tech for 22yrs and my knowledge varies from 1930 to 2008.i'm from the state of ri and as far as i'm concerned and anyone in the area knows that the glass man is the best especially with the old cars. antiques and hot rods so my hat off to the tech who in few words explained the dw685 install the best. cause with chrome, double lip gasket can be a pain in the glass
