Who Can You Trust??

Quick story--

My elderly dog has arthritis. There are four anti-inflam drugs out there that may help but can have fatal side effects. FYI- those drugs are based in Vioxx and Celebrex that were pulled off the market for humans.

My wife and I have been extremely diligent about trying to ascertain what drug works best for him along with having minimal side effects. Based on results, we have decided on one. Found out that the drug costs about $110/mo if we buy from the vet. Ouch!!!

So off we go to internet Pet drug sales land and find places that offer as much as half that price. I sort of believe in the theory of "you get what you pay for".
On a whim, my wife calls the drug manufacturer and asks if they sell this branded drug to a certain website.

Their reply? "We sell no drug to any internet wholesaler. In fact we believe that at least half of the drugs sold on sites like that may be counterfeit"

We own pets that use flea and heartworm products. However there have been times that products bought over the internet have not worked which sort of validates what the drug company states.

It's nice to know that that their is another industry out there that builds trust like our very own one. It least we sell real glass and not saran wrap.

Re: Who Can You Trust??

That's tough sorry to hear about your pet.
Believe it or not we have pet heatlth ins for our golden for three years. If your bills are x$ then this might be worth a look into. They cover a portion of meds and doctor visits.

Re: Who Can You Trust??

We go to PetMeds.com for our rotweiller and everything that we have bought from them was the same name brand and works the same as store bought. But I dont think they carry at the specialty items...I really hurts when your loved family pet is ill and they depend on us to make them feel better.............

Re: Who Can You Trust??

XS,

We've been a satisfied customer of PetMeds for a few years and that's where we had just one minor problem with a flea pill a single time. I never gave thing s much thought until this item came up

What is of concern (and this applies to human prescription drug sales as well) on these internet sites is where exactly they get their drugs from. The drugs could be purchased second-hand legally, some have been found to be expired and others are just counterfeit. My wife asked PetMeds to guarantee in writing that the prescription drug they were offering to us for sale were the same found at the vets and they refused.

One parallel that little comfort can be taken from is while our glass system is fairly unregulated making the installation business problematical for the consumer, it is far far less dangerous and more regulated than the drug industry. Drugs like Viosxx and Celebrex were rushed to market to sell to aging boomers and ooops (am i bad?) there appeared fatal side effects in a much larger scale than appeared in limited trials.

supplements and viatmins are so deregulated that you can find almost everything in them including anabolic steroids. The FDA rule is basically : You can say almost anything or sell anything as long as it doesn't kill too many of its users. Ephedra had to kill a few pro baseball players before Congress took notice. Even then the Ephedra Council (Yes there was one) complained that they were being unfairly picked on)

To sum up: I, who support a much harder entry into the auto glass installation business and desire a more regulated industry has little hope of those goals ever being truly attained just by looking at the mess the FDA has created by it's non-vigilance and lack of enforcement.....all caused by the power that the drug industry has purchased.

Re: Who Can You Trust??

we had a lab that was very arthritic. she could barely move. we would have to make walk so she would get some cardio done. then my mom bought dog meds that contained glucosamene( not sure on spelling). anyways after a few weeks she became more active. she still had difficulty moving, but there was a noticable difference in her quality of life. i do not know the cost of the product, but it was well worth to she her have a good life.

Re: Who Can You Trust??

I take lodine and glucosamine and they both help but wouldn't have any idea on a dose rate. I think Walgreens have some kind of medical club for pets.

As bad as I hate to mention it, our secretary gets medicine for her pet at Wal-Mart.

Re: Who Can You Trust??

J, My wife did call some local chains such as Long's Drugs and Walgreens. Both do not sell pet prescriptions. We did not check with Wal-Mart. I can go on line for that.
Thanks, I did get a few sample packs from a vet friend of mine which will initially help

I was not trying to denigrate on-line Pet med places but I did want to alert people who read this forum that there are so many holes in the drug supply chain, just watch out. We are seeing counterfeit tempered parts come in from China but that still pales in importance to one's health (or your pets) in buying drugs online. Buyer indeed beware
