Drain engine coolant?

WOW!!! Now i've read everything about changing a w/s.
Was reading the latest edition of Autoglass journal. It has the 07 silverado as a subject.I can understand removing the wires they mention, but why lock the steering wheel, remove the HVAC,and drain the engine coolant!??!DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT?WHY? That's what i would like to know. The article does not mention why to drain the coolant.

Re: Drain engine coolant?

Don't forget to rotate the air in the tires & adjust the fan belt buckle. I don't get the engine coolant drain at all.

Re: Drain engine coolant?

Don't forget that if you change the turn signal fluid on some older models you also need to drain and flush the high beam reservoir before refilling.

Re: Drain engine coolant?

Make sure you bleed the brakes, change the oil and re-build the transmission while you are there. All that is included in the lowsy 2.2 labor hours NAGS gives you. :)

Re: Drain engine coolant?

Wait,theres more.

Step #1-Turn steering wheel so that vehicle's wheels point straight ahead.[CAUTION: wheels of vehicle must be straight ahead and steering column inLOCK position before disconnecting steering column or intermediate shaft from steering gear.Failure to do so will cause SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to coil assembly.]

#24-Disconnect instrument panel electical connections.

#26-Install steering column anti-rotation pin in steering column lower access hole.

#29- Remove steering shaft coupling nut and bolt.Remove 3 steering column seal nuts.

#30-Remove steering column seal.
#31-Remove steering shaft coupling nut and bolt.
#37-Drain engine coolant.
Remove heater line,Remove intake manifold shield.Remove HVAC.
You finally get to add your water and cut out the w/s on step #92.

All this in 2.2 hrs? That i would like to see. :)

Re: Drain engine coolant?

I checked factory replacement procedures and none of that is in there.
It is however the procedures for steering shaft removal.

Can you say TYPO!

Re: Drain engine coolant?

Feb AGN issue has a BMW windshield removal procedure. After you remove thw hood and tape up everything and get your cutout tool ready, you (step 22) "Insert knife carefully between body and rear window glass".
Boy these guys are good.
