dot 563 ppg lexus suv mirror brackets
did a dot 563 w/s on a lexus suv the other day and had the hardest time putting the mirror back on the bracket (you know the one with the bb's). i've done a lot of others just like this with other brands of glass with no problem. this one seemed like the bracket just didn't fit the mirror properly. any of you guys had the same problem? just wondering?

Re: dot 563 ppg lexus suv mirror brackets
had the exact same problem, don't know what dot it was,but it was chinese. I used the old w/s bracket after wasting time with the new one. The 2 holes that the bb's sit in are off slightly

Re: dot 563 ppg lexus suv mirror brackets
You can't trust any of the brackets to be precise except from the dealer. I always burn them off as a whole and reglue back on. Nothing worse than having the bearings pop out after shield has been set. Hard to reinstall upside down. Shame on you guys for even trying on chinese glass. I got burned too many times trying to transfer them.

Re: dot 563 ppg lexus suv mirror brackets
XS- would you rather try to swap out the guts using the bracket that comes on many of the aftermarket glass or burn off and reglue on all original components of the mirror bracket as one?

Re: dot 563 ppg lexus suv mirror brackets
Truthfully I was responding the use the PPG glass.I am stating that I use whatz out there meaning I use whats available as far as glass brands go.
On the mirror bracket issue.I can only tell you what we do....we have spare brackets complete.when you get dealer glass for some insurance customers request they come with it.what we do is we burn off the bracket and save the unit complete. And when we get aftermarket glass we get bracket off and urethane the complete bracket onto the new glas the nite before..And when we get old broken glass back to shop we just save that one and the cycle just begins again...I'd like to think of it as going green by recycling.lol............Note very important to urethane instead of minute bond...by urethaning like factory you wil not get mirror bracket stress crack in extreme temperature conditions...the urethane will allow certain amount of space for contraction and expansions for glass to metal ratio...

Re: dot 563 ppg lexus suv mirror brackets
XS, never thought about urethaning compared to mirror glue. Makes sense. I've heard some installers that are completely against burning off brackets and reattaching and will only swap out the guts due to it not being a short cut. I don't see what part of that is being a shortcut. Either way those brackets are being glued on at one point or another. We even had some from lof being bad brackets. We do the same with having a few extra on hand and keep recycling them. Do you guys get new side molding on every install or do you reuse the old ones. You said your from NJ so you have winter temps to deal with as we do too. Just curious

Re: dot 563 ppg lexus suv mirror brackets
I honestly can't believe what I am reading about how you guys actualy think that re-engineering a window is fine. If a bracket has a problem GET A NEW WINDSHIELD! for god sakes people if you want industries to look upon this field as professional then start BEING professional. If you knew half of what is involved with glass as far as why its made this way your mind would explode to the facts on how strong yet fragile this stuff is & how your quick fixes changes the structure of the glass! KNOW YOUR PRODUCT.

Re: dot 563 ppg lexus suv mirror brackets
I want to come work for your company. I want be a part of this perfect world that you found. Some companies don't care what the installer thinks. If a better piece of glass cuts into their profit margin they are not going to get it. These decisions come from higher ups that have never installed a window in their life and don't know the difference between a cowl or wiper so it's hard for them to relate or care. If I had a choice of what I installed it would be all dealer glass or dealer molding with lof glass. I install what my company gives me. It sucks but it's the way it is. 15 years in the business. 3 different companies and they are all the same just a different color van.

Re: dot 563 ppg lexus suv mirror brackets
yeah john! the dealer w/s for that particular job was over $500 my cost so by installing an aftermarket dot 563 I saved the customer several hundred dollars. it was a cash deal. and by the way like some others have said: you have to use what's available and sometimes the local suppliers just have the dot 563's in stock. man even pilkington has stuff made over seas. they all do it. it's a new world now. enough said.

Re: dot 563 ppg lexus suv mirror brackets
Dealer glass?????Sorry dude, this is the real world, and in the real world we have to make a profit and a living...If I'd can install all dealer glass and make the same profit margin I would..But I can't so I wont....mainly all people that request dealer glass all covered 100% from insurance...
Yes we use the side moldings over on the lexus rx300.they are very easy to remove...We dont dameage them at all..Only only time we do get new ones are when some schmuck has chopped off the rivits and threw away the retainer and glued the moldings down..
Yes the Tri State area offers us all 4 seasons..Its like cold as alaska in the winter and as hot as florida in the summer...and everything in between...

Make it work (this will vary depending on your level of expertise or experience). The glass is all the same, its the rocks that are different. Everything is everything. Dont sweat the small stuff- its all small stuff.

Re: dot 563 ppg lexus suv mirror brackets
I am still laughing from "hey john L". Just Get a new w/s. ha ha. glueing a bracket on changes the structure of a windshield. heating the mirrow bracket to loosen glue won't do that. You funny man. You re-tard.
Golden rule on site "work with what you have" finish the job. Make it look good, make it last, make it safe and make it so the next tech can replace the glass with out having to know magic. If you need to come back to replace clips or fix molding, inform customer, but get the initial job done, glass out of your van and bill it out!!!

Re: dot 563 ppg lexus suv mirror brackets
did one yesterday and had a heck of a time with the mirror bracket same dot # Had to reuse the old one but the funny thing is that the old windshield that I removed had no bug on the windshield anyone ever run into this.

Re: dot 563 ppg lexus suv mirror brackets
I've 2 of them recently and didn't have any problems with the bracket. I have run into in the past with Chinese glass. I guess there's just no consistancy other than bad when it comes to that stuff.
