Who wires glass out anymore?

Two things I hate.... Working on weekends and installing used windshields. I did both today. This dude paid 50 bucks for a used 970 with a bullseye chip in it, scratches and they used music wire to get it out, clams all over, plus they wired into the lammy on the one corner separating the glass.
My thought was, Who the heck uses music wire anymore.
I had a big roll of wire and I trashed it about 7 years ago. I said NEVER again will I use wire.
I see equalizer still sells the wire and all the tools for it, I wonder how much of that they actually sell.
A nice sharp Express blade lots of Sika Slick and I have cut out and saved hundreds of parts. NEVER will I use wire again. OH, I told this guy to drive to the junk yard and get 40 of his 50 bucks back, Good luck with that.

Re: Who wires glass out anymore?

YOU INSTALL USED WINDSHIELDS?

NOT ME. NOT A CHANCE! OEM ONLY. In fact I take great pleasure telling those fools to install it themselves or call the roach bugs.

Weekends....At a PREMIUM price. My Son plays Baseball and that comes first. However, my best insurance calls come on the weekends when the others do not answer their phones.

Wire has it's uses. DB8265/6 Camaro Back Glass..to remove the plastic across the top (if you are still sucking on the body shop teet), and

FW2650 Mitzubishi Eclipse A Pillar moldings. I send those to Safelite just to **** them off.

My truck does not move for less than $150 local only, $200 on weekends.

Got to go...Fish on!

I agree, a job is a job. I take whatever I can get besides he was referred by a good client of mine, and body shop teet??? I make good money from body shops. Very nice to have during the slow months.

Re: Who wires glass out anymore?

With all of these "new fangled" exposed edge glasses, wire sure has its uses. The mantra is "No Scratches" so anything that will help accomplish that mission is in play. I use the Equalizer Braided stuff.

One of my body shop accounts do a bunch of Audi A4 and 6's quarter panel replacements. Taking the rear 1/4 out I cut the hypotenuse and base sides and wire out the remainder. (no way can an Express cut it from the inside).

Odyesssy Sliding Door assemblies whether for paint peeling repair or skin replacements, I cold knife top and bottom and wire out the sides. I make no attempt to save moldings----- they buy and supply new.

No used glass installed. too much trouble to find, transport and to install. I don't need the headaches and especially the liability.

Unless the phone is off, I will always answer on the weekend. (won't work however)

Re: Who wires glass out anymore?

We dont suplly used glass. The customer has to supply it and transport it to the shop......I've done a few installs on weekends personally for good clients in a emergency situations if I have the glass in stock....I'd never ask some of my JR partners to do it since im the SR partner.some things you just dont do........

Re: Who wires glass out anymore?

I work Saturdays from 9am to 2pm IF and thats a very BIG IF I have the workload. I like getting up and getting going...it also gives me the chance to make an extra buck since most shops won't do it.

I agree on answering the phone on weekends...I book alot of jobs for the upcoming week just by answering the phone on weekends when no one is at the other shops. Thats where a cell phone comes in handy. Alot of times people just want to know they have the problem takin' care of and don't want to wait 'til Monday to start calling.

As far as used glass goes the only ones I usually install are parts where the glass is just EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE...like the old Chevy Blazer quarter glasses and lift gate glasses. Same with some of the Subaru back glasses. I don't do this for nothing though...I charge several hundred most of the time...this still saves a ton of money though when you have an $800 priced new part.

Re: Who wires glass out anymore?

We do a lot of R&I & R&R. We use a variety of removal tools including wire. Fein, ext, exp, btb,eq ninja, cold knifes, long knifes and especialy wire. We will do studio jobs and install clear glass in cars and never put the original glass back in. Right now we have 2 sets for Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7,Hummer H3 and the list goes on. Now we have a job doing 6 Ford Focus all clear. Any one want some glass??? You bet We install used glass any chance we get. Now you mobile only guys I bet you have a stash tucked away of parts that are good sellers and you just can't trash. Come on fess up. And you OEM people what do you do when no OEM is available? Refuse the job? We had a guy with a 61 Fiat wanting original glass. He didn't want any of that chinee crap. GOOD LUCK. Oh well gotta go meet a customer bringing us a 55 Maserati w/s to make for him. THanks IRA I'll be talking to you. Especially about my charges for SUNDAY.

Re: Who wires glass out anymore?

Guys, my comment about the body shop teet is not meant to disparage those of you who do that sort of work. I see from what I read on this site that alot of you do. I did too up until about 1995 when I said enough. I am grateful that I'm in a market that allows me to work when I want and where I want and I don't have to answer to some auto dealership or body shop wanting me there yesterday to do an R&R on a quarter glass ($45.00 for two trips..oh and you are paid in 60 days). WOW, what a deal.

The Camaro I mentioned was at a shop which later became an Abra shop. The body tech got the hole wrong and wanted me to compensate by filling it with urethane. I said no and got fired. So I went fishing and never looked back. Never got paid either.

By the way Slam, a new DW970 is only $41.00 at PPG.

Re: Who wires glass out anymore?

We dont have that many bodyshop accounts because of that reason. For $65.00 we tell them to go scratch...The bodyshops that we do service pay reasonable cost for us to do the job..we had a few that squaked about the price.we nicely explained to them that the cost..Some accecpted and some went elsewhere and some came back after they tasted what was out there...we have overhead costs just like they do...And yes I have made a few emergency sunday service calls to good customers houses through out the years................
Hey sawfish Please out of courtesy not post cost of glass...We dont want the wrong people reading what we pay for it....

Re: Who wires glass out anymore?

Yes I know however my discount isn't that great at PPG. I only use them to get my Sika products. I had a good account of mine (car lot) Wanted me to do 4 repairs on the same glass (1168), I told him I would give him a SUPER deal on a brand new glass if he didn't make me do the 4 repairs. I charged him 99 bucks. I told him, don't get use to that price, Were kinda like friends now besides his lot is directly across from AGS.

Re: Re: Who wires glass out anymore?

ok. So I "practiced" on a jeep liberty today- 1st time using the square squire wire. I cut the bottom and 3/4 the way up the sides, laced the wire around the top and into the vehical where I stopped cutting with the express...

holy hannah! It was still very hard pulling thru the uri!!! I know the path of least resistance is between the glass and the urethane, but the wire wanted to cut right thru the middle of the bead.

any other tips? I didn't destroy anything and got the job done, but man that was tougher than I thought it would be to pull thru it. The urethane was an inch to an inch and a quarter wide from the factory- maybe wider than normal for most windows?????

Will lubrication help? What other tips do ya got out there?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!

Re: Who wires glass out anymore?

I've never used it with two people. You just have to figure uot a way to protect the dash because it WILL damage the dash. The Squire isn't sharp to the touch but it slices through the thane like butter. Much better product then piano wire or the other wire.

Re: Who wires glass out anymore?

I would use a long knife or the express on the bottom of the windshield.

I was mainly worried about the top and sides with that exposed edge glass.

I suppose if wire is the tool that works the best tool I will have to do these as two man jobs.

Why would you install a windshield with a stone chip in it? Isn't that considered a broken windshield, and thus illegal to install?

Re: Who wires glass out anymore?

Watch the housewares stores. They keep some real thin plastic place mats. These work well for a sheild to wire out the top on Chrysler w/s with no trim that fit close. Also can be cut in strips to protect sides when wireing out or using a cold knife with a close fit.

How do you keep the wire cutting along the glass- as opposed to "digging in" towards the body? We are practicing on a few, but the wire is pulling hard...
